Twilight convention hits town this weekend

Local Twihards will have a chance to satisfy their vampire craving this weekend at the first official Twilight Convention.

The event, which is making its first Canadian appearance in Vancouver, started in San Francisco about a year ago.

“It’s all fans that attend, it’s a lot of moms and daughters,” said Gary Berman, co-CEO of Creation Entertainment, the company organizing it.

There’ll be a vampire ball on Saturday night, trivia contests, costume parades, question-and-answer sessions, autographs and photos with celebrities.

“What’s cool about Twilight conventions is the intensity of the passion that our attendees have,” said Berman in a phone interview from Glendale, Calif.

Vancouverite Emily Lewis said the convention is a great way for fans to meet each other in person.

“I went to the premiere of Twilight and people were all dressed up … it’s all so exciting,” said Lewis, who may attend the event this weekend.

She said that, like most Twihards, she has read all the books, been to book release parties and even travelled to Forks, Wash., where part of the series was filmed.

“I’m just really into vampires,” said Lewis.

Berman said this convention is different from the others his company puts on, such as Star Trek, X-Files and Stargate SG-1 because the young attendees are of similar age to the teenage celebrities.

“(There’s) a lot of screaming, excitement and intensity at these (Twilight) shows.”
