The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is now harnessing the power of Twitter. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Const. Anne Longley tweeted all day, reporting dispatch calls from her VPD laptop in real-time.

“I’m astounded how many people are following us — how many people are interested in what we’re doing,” said Longley.

“We really felt it was time for us to embrace social media that will broaden the reach of the important information that we can get out to the public.”

“We’re trying to build relationships with the public,” Longley said, adding that Twitter can rally help from the public with issues like finding missing persons.
