Police have arrested two men from Ontario in connection with an alleged debit card skimming scheme in the city.
Police said a Calgarian found a debit skimming device at the TD Canada Trust bank in the 3600 block of Brentwood Road NW on Saturday. Two days later, the same Calgarian found another skimmer on the same bank machine, but investigators believe the incidents are unrelated.
“These men had apparently driven 36 hours non-stop to Edmonton and conducted a 72-hour crime spree, and were in the midst of another 72-hour crime spree in Calgary,” alleged police spokesperson Kevin Brookwell, referring to the first TD incident.
Michael Joseph Stewart, 29, of Toronto and Hamilton Hillary Savoury, 45, of Scarborough, Ont., are each charged with two counts of possession of a device for forging. More charges are pending.
Meanwhile, Calgary Comic Book Expo officials continue to look into reports machines were tampered with at the BMO Centre, and ask anyone with concerns to contact police. Stampede spokesperson Doug Fraser also said police are looking into the matter.
Yesterday, Metro erroneously reported a man had been arrested in the skimming case at the BMO Centre due to a miscommunication with police. The arrests were for the aforementioned TD Canada Trust incident.
