Two-car crash leaves man in critical condition

Two drivers suffered serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash on Prince of Wales Drive Thursday morning.

The collision, which occurred between Merivale Road and Crestway Drive at around 9:19 a.m., left a 59-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman with serious injuries.

Ottawa paramedics treated the man, who was driving an SUV, for life-threatening head and internal injuries at the scene. He was airlifted from the scene and is in critical condition in hospital.

The woman was treated for chest and knee injuries. She is serious but stable condition in hospital.
Police are now investigating the collision.

Ottawa paramedics were kept busy Thursday morning, responding to 43 collisions with reported injuries between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m., said Ottawa paramedic spokesman J.P. Trottier.

Of those 43 responses, 60 per cent of the collisions were found to have no injuries when paramedics arrived at scene.

“There was a lot of hard black ice throughout the downtown core,” said Trottier. “We found ourselves going from collision to collision.”

Ottawa Police Service issued a black ice warning Thursday morning, asking drivers to exercise extra caution at overpasses, bridges and hills.

More distance should also be left between vehicles and vehicle speed reduced.
