Two men arrested after botched store theft

A sharp-eyed police officer got more than a double-double at a Tim Hortons yesterday morning when he spotted a pair of men who minutes before had allegedly beaten the clerk and robbed a convenience store, police said yesterday.

Yesterday at 5:30 a.m., two men entered the 7-Eleven at 710 West Sixth Ave. Police allege one of them jumped the counter and began beating the clerk while his partner began stealing cash from the till.

Meanwhile, a police cruiser pulled into the parking lot and in the confusion that followed, the clerk was able to scramble to safety. The two men ran out the back as the officer called for backup.

Police flooded the area and called in a police dog to track the suspects.

One of the officers was strolling by the Tim Hortons in the 800 block of West Broadway when he spotted the two men inside the restaurant. The men once again fled out the back door.

A dog was brought in and the men were captured hiding in some bushes a short distance away.
