Two men drown at Bala Falls after trying to rescue child

BALA, Ont. – The bodies of two men have been pulled from the water at the Bala Falls in Ontario’s cottage country this afternoon, just a few days after a triple-drowning in the same area.

Provincial police from the Bracebridge detachment say two men entered the fast-moving water at the base of the falls just before 2 p.m. to rescue a nine-year-old girl who’s a family member.

The girl, who was wearing a lifejacket and playing in the water, had begun to drift away from shore.

She has been rescued.

Constable Peter Leon says one of the men is from the northern United States while the other is from the Mississauga area.

Police say the bodies were found by emergency services personnel and have been transported to the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital.
