Two prisoners in hospital after Gatineau jail riot

Two Gatineau jail inmates are in hospital after a riot broke out in the maximum security section of the facility late Sunday night.

At around 11 p.m., Surete du Quebec police were called to the Gatineau Detention Centre to intervene after a fight broke out, said Const. Steve Lalande Monday.

The riot allegedly began in section B2 after four individuals “reputed to be gang members,” allegedly assaulted two other inmates, said Lalande.

According to Lalande, “random weapons, such as a toothbrush and a toaster,” were used during the riot.

Two inmates were transported to Gatineau hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

“Both individuals do not wish to put in charges,” said Lalande.

While the incident remains under investigation, the file will be submitted to the Crown Prosecutor for analysis and possible charges.
