Txt ur tips 2 Crime Stoppers

Tuning into new technology, Calgary Crime Stoppers will now be accepting anonymous crime tips through text messaging.

Although cities such as Toronto and Vancouver have had the new avenue for a year or two now, Calgary just recently acquired the proper software to conceal texters’ identities, according to Crime Stoppers president Terry Hathaway.

“The teens that live in my house live for their cellphones and are constantly texting. We think it’s important to be current with technology and what people are using,” Hathaway said, adding they have already received tips through text this week.

“I think people will really pick up on this and we expect it will get going right away. Now people can text, call or go online, all anonymously.”

Hathaway thinks the new avenue may appeal more to a younger demographic, but acknowledges almost everyone carries cellphones.

“But the younger generation probably text a lot more than us older ones,” he added.

Calgarian Chris Hodgins, 27, thinks the concept is appropriate given modern technology.

“I think it’s a good idea to open up the lines of communication as much as you can,” he added.

Texters will be given aliases to protect their identity and tips through text are still eligible for a $2,000 reward. To report a crime to Crime Stoppers type TTTTips and your message to 274637.
