U of C career fair shows jobs still out there

Despite sour predictions for the economy, the University of Calgary held a sold-out career fair yesterday, with 130 vendors taking part.

Voula Cocolakis, U of?C’s director of career services, said it expects 3,000 students to browse through the possibilities at the fifth annual fair.

“There has been a lot of doom and gloom … but there are still opportunities out there,” she said, adding that fewer positions mean that students must compete with other graduates.

But student Gibran Lopez was still anxious as he wandered around the Jack Simpson gym where the fair was held.

Lopez said that it was encouraging to see all the employers at the fair but “it’s scary” to think that he might not get a job as a new grad with a degree in chemistry.
