U of C student makes history

She got bucked off, but she still had the time of her life riding the bronco that did it.

University of Calgary athletic therapy student Brittany Mercier just started riding broncos seven months ago, but yesterday became the first woman in modern history to ride in the novice saddle bronc riding.

“He bucked me off, he’s a really strong, tremendous horse but it was really fun. It’s great to see so many people out there supporting me,” Mercier said.

“I’d absolutely do it again, I loved it.”

Calgary Stampede rodeo administrator Barry McGrath said they have had women compete in steer riding, but never in the novice saddle bronc.

“It’s the first to my knowledge and we’re excited to have her,” he said.
