U of C working to fix wage disparity

Following a report outlining large gaps between the salary earnings of male professors versus female professors, the University of Calgary said they are making improvements.

Grady Semmens, spokesperson for the U of C, said the school is well aware of the wage issue and said they have already been taking steps to improve equality.

“We’re actually going through quite a large, campus-wide equity review right now, looking at all aspects of equity not just gender,” he said.

Semmens said there are many reasons that can explain the wage discrepancies.

“It appears that it is due mostly to hiring practices and just the way things have happened in the past with the fact that most of our long-serving senior professors here are men.”

Lindsay Spence, a University of Alberta student with a double major in history and women studies, said she hopes to one day become a university professor.

“I’m going to get paid less no matter what degree I’m in or what occupation I go into,” she said. “You can’t deny the fact that women still are getting paid less than men in any field they’re in.”
