U of O med school scores top marks

The University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine has won glowing reviews from two ratings bodies.

The report from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education passes the school on 127 of 131 standards, a score of approximately 97 per cent, and continues its accreditation automatically for the next eight years.

“The fact that we know that we are in the clear, as it were, for the next eight years, makes us particularly thrilled and I think it’s a recognition of the work we have done to really provide our students with a state of-the-art curriculum,” said Dr. Geneviève Moineau, associate dean of the MD program.

The school won particular praise for its fully bilingual instruction and student satisfaction rates as high as a hundred per cent.

And the advantage to Ottawa residents, of having the medical school here, Dr. Moineau said, are considerable. “We know that 40 per cent of our medical students stay in the Ottawa area to do their residencies and many of those individuals will stay in the Ottawa area for their medical practice and so having a strong program is a tremendous benefit to the community,” she said.
