James Avery, the man who played the Judge Phillip Banks in “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air,” passed away on Wednesday at the age of 68.
Avery, who played Will Smith’s wealthy, no-nonsese uncle was the only person on the show to lay down the law and keep Will in line whenever he became out of control. Despite the fact Uncle Phil had a strict and stern demeanor, he was also the center of many of the jokes. He was a large man and stood over 6 feet tall, and Will took advantage of every opportunity to make a joke about his size, and it was always hilarious.
