Unclear why sisters hit by SUV were on road: Police

A 17-year-old girl is dead and her 19-year-old sister is in hospital in critical condition after being struck by an SUV early yesterday morning.

The two teens were standing in the middle of eastbound 16th Avenue near the 3600 block NE around 3 a.m. when they were struck.

“We don’t know why they were on the road,” said Duty Insp. Rob Williams.

Police say the street lights on that section of the highway were not on at the time of the crash and may be a factor. Both females were thrown upon impact.

Williams said the driver of the SUV immediately rendered assistance and called police. Several calls were made to police before the collision.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor for the two females, but not for the male driver of the SUV.

Police say the driver of the SUV co-operated fully.

The eastbound portion of 16th Avenue, between 36 Street and 52 Street NE, was closed for several hours yesterday morning as police investigated, but had re-opened toward the end of morning rush hour traffic.
