Backyard chickens may not be far off as Animal and Bylaw Services is set to present a one-year pilot project for preliminary review by a city committee Wednesday.
The project will involve a number of Calgarians housing up to six hens in their backyards for the production of eggs.
“We’ve been trying to create an understanding with citizens about the right to food,” said Paul Hughes, president of the Canadian Liberated Urban Chicken Klub.
Data will be collected to see if this type of urban farming is feasible, said head of Animal and Bylaw Services Bill Bruce.
“I’m hoping to learn what it is Calgarians expect … the only way to do that is to really try this,” he said.
Bruce said that if approved by the committee on community and protective services, the proposal will move on to city council. He said he hopes to see the project underway by July.
