Van Koeverden blasts Stojko for boycott talk

Olympic kayaking champion Adam Van Koeverden is peeved at former figure skating star Elvis Stojko’s recent remarks that athletes should “think twice” before going to the Beijing Games.

Van Koeverden, speaking yesterday at a media day at the Burloak Canoe Club in Oakville where he trains, didn’t pull any punches when asked about comments Stojko made at a rally in Toronto last weekend protesting China’s human rights record. He called them “ridiculous.”

“I just think if these were his Olympics, he would probably have moderated his comments a little bit more,” said Van Koeverden. “I respect him. I respect his comments. Like I said, everybody has a right to their opinion.

“But I question whether or not that would be his opinion if he was on his way to get his gold medal — especially after two silvers.”
