Vancouver dancer Kirsten Wicklund says she was so overwhelmed when she learned she’d made it in the top 22 of this season’s So You Think You Can Dance Canada that she was shaking.

“I had it in my mind it could go either way,” said the 20-year-old contemporary ballerina. “You want it so bad but you don’t want to be over-confident.”

Wicklund said the first week was nerve-wracking, and while the learning curve is steep, she’s excited to tackle new dance styles like ballroom.

“(My) ballet training hinders (in ballroom) because ballet is so upright,” she said. “But lines-wise, my ballet has been helping me.”

As a viewer-turned-competitor, Wicklund said she’s surprised to see how hectic life is behind the scenes.

“You don’t realize how many other things are going on during the week,” she said. “There are a lot of fittings with wardrobe (and) interviews. It’s been pretty intense.”

So You Think You Can Dance Canada airs Monday at 9 p.m. EST on CTV.
