Vancouver Community College building garners award

Senior interior designer Janice Hicks of Vancouver firm Stantec Architecture said she and members of her design team are “thrilled” to be recognized for their efforts in Building B, at the Broadway campus of Vancouver Community College (VCC).

“I’m a people person, and community projects are the things I get the most joy out of,” Hicks added.

Last month, Stantec received a bronze medal from the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia (IDIBC) for VCC Building B’s interior layout.

“The building houses a grouping of disciplines, and we wanted to make sure there was enough space for ever-changing technology requirements,” said Hicks.

“We also wanted students from other areas to recognize (Building B) as part of their campus, and feel like they were invited to come down there.”

Building B houses the School of Health Sciences, including health care labs and classrooms. There is also abundant study space for students, a designated event space, a coffee kiosk, and additional rooms for staff meetings. Stantec, as well as staff and students of the college, celebrate the availability of natural light, the interconnecting staircases, and comfortable seating areas throughout.

VCC plays host to nearly 25,000 students per year, and is the largest public college in B.C. accredited by the provincial Ministry of Advanced Education.
