Vancouver’s new king of the hill

Sebastian Salas set a new Grouse Grind record of 23 minutes and 48 seconds yesterday — with hometown pride fuelling his every stride.

“Being from Vancouver, I thought it would be fitting for someone here to hold the record,” Salas said.

The last record of 24 minutes and 22 seconds was set by New Zealand native and two-time Olympian Jonathan Wyatt in 2004. Salas said he prepared by joining a semi-pro bike team and climbing the Grind every weekend for four months.

“The first time I ran the Grind was the race in 2008, which I won unexpectedly,” said Salas.
