Vancouver School Board facing staffing cutbacks

The Vancouver School Board (VSB) has put forth a proposal that would see cuts to education in order to accommodate a $7.12-million shortfall.

According to Patti Bacchus, chairperson for the VSB, the cutbacks won’t include laying off teachers, but it does mean reducing the number of staff.

“It does contain reductions without creating actual layoffs,” Bacchus said. “There will be attrition, retirements and we won’t be filling vacant positions.”

The proposed budget includes reductions in administration, supplies and services.

“This is a real problem,” Bacchus said. “At a time when we need to be investing in education, we have these shortfalls that are setting us back.”

A final proposal will be announced by the end of April.
