A Vancouver city councillor wants VANOC to make good on a promise to consult inner-city neighbourhoods before the 2010 Olympic security policy is finalized.
Vision Coun. Geoff Meggs said the promise to consult residents was part of Vancouver’s original bid book to the International Olympic Committee.
“We want to make sure the community has a sense that … they’ll be safe during the Games, but also that their civil liberties will be respected,” said Meggs, whose motion will appear before city council today.
It will likely not be voted on until Thursday so that the public can comment.
Meggs said consultation should include residents in the Downtown peninsula, the Downtown Eastside and Mount Pleasant who live near Games venues. He also wants the city to review the Inner City Commitment Statement relating to progress in its commitments.
