‘Veggie-Mobile’ cruises back into town

Used french fry oil fuelled a B.C. couple’s record-breaking drive across North America that ended in Vancouver yesterday.

Cloe Whittaker and Tyson Jerry drove a Mitsubishi van dubbed the “Veggie-Mobile” as part of their Driven to Sustain campaign. It carried a trailer full of waste oil, mostly donated by New York Fries, that kept the diesel engine powered during their six-month journey that broke the Guinness World Record for longest journey by car using alternative fuel.

“It feels amazing to be done,” said Whittaker of the 48,535-kilometre drive.

The duo said the trip combined Whittaker’s dream of travelling North America by car and Jerry’s dream of promoting environmental sustainability.

They spent $40,000 of their own money and spoke to more than 10,000 students at schools about living a greener lifestyle along the way.

“We need to be looking into alternatives in every aspect of our lifestyle … The van is a symbol of that,” said Whittaker.

The couple are planning on writing a book and possibly a documentary.

“This is a finish to a bigger beginning,” said Jerry.
