On the eve of puck drop on their 32nd season, the Edmonton Oilers named their thirteenth captain in franchise history yesterday.

"It certainly shouldn't come as any surprise that we decided Shawn Horcoff is the next captain of the Edmonton Oilers," said head coach Tom Renney, as he handed Horcoff a new jersey with the letter "C" sewn onto the chest.

Renney said the Oilers have a young team that needs veteran leadership and he said Horcoff was an obvious choice.

"It's obviously a tremendous honour for myself and my family," Horcoff said.

"With the tradition that the Oilers have here as a team, and with the leaders they've had, just to be added to that group of names is something that I never thought would happen but now that it has, it's a big honour."

Oilers young star Taylor Hall sits next to the new captain in the dressing room and said Horcoff is the right choice to lead the team.

"It's good because I can sit beside him and see what he does," Hall said.

"He leads by example very well and I think that's a pretty good trait for a captain."
