Veteran political reporter jumps ship for CBC

One of the province’s top political reporters is switching media ships.

Legislative reporter Amy Smith is leaving The Chronicle Herald to join CBC Television. When she starts in mid-September, part of Smith’s new position will include co-hosting newscasts alongside current host Tom Murphy, CBC News announced yesterday.

“We’re continuing to build Nova Scotia’s strongest newsroom and Amy is recognized as one of the best journalists in the province,” Andrew Cochran, managing director of CBC Maritimes, said in a news release.

Smith has worked at the Herald for 15 years.

The move is part of CBC’s overhaul of its flagship news show. Starting Aug. 31, the program will be broken into three half-hour segments running from 5 to 6:30 p.m. They are CBC News: Nova Scotia at 5; CBC News: Halifax at 5:30 and already popular CBC News: Nova Scotia at 6.
