Young men using drug to ‘party’ at risk, study says

After 10 years of Viagra, millions of aging men with erectile dysfunction have been able to heat up their sex lives once again, but younger men using the drug recreationally could be ruining theirs.

Dr. Marelize Swart, a sex therapist working in Vancouver, said she has heard of young men combining Viagra with other drugs like Ecstasy to "party".

"There is the chance of psychological addiction when you do this," she said. "So you don’t have the confidence to try sex without it."

Along with the risk of dependence, there is also a risk of infertility, according to research from Queen’s University in Belfast.

The University study said sperm cells don’t fertilize eggs as effectively when men are using Viagra.

But Viagra abuse is less likely among young men with long-term partners, Swart said.

"Especially if they are in a relationship, they are likely to say at some point, ‘I don’t want to spend $15 for a pill every day,’ " she said. "If they are still having problems, they might go to a sex therapist."

booming business

  • An estimated 35 million men around the globe have taken Viagra over the last 10 years.

  • In Canada, the pill has been around for nine years, with 37 million dispensed to 1.6 million men.
