The second Violent Crime Suppression Team barely got its feet wet on the new beat before making a significant arrest Saturday, said Calgary police.
While on foot patrol, team members approached a vehicle stopped along 17 Avenue SW and 2nd Street while patrolling 17th Avenue bars Saturday night and smelled burnt marijuana coming from the windows, according to duty Insp. Keith Pollock.
“They recognized the vehicle and its occupants as being known to be involved in the drug trade,” he added. “It was the second team out patrolling the area.”
The team arrested three of the vehicle occupants after they allegedly found cocaine, scales, cash and a loaded handgun.
Pollock said the arrests were a positive first weekend for the officers, getting a handgun off the street.
It was the first weekend for the added members of the Violent Crime Suppression Team, which was just announced by the police service on Thursday.
Edmond Cole, 19, Frederick Harrison, 23, and Okpoti Koney, 21, all from Calgary, are charged with numerous offences including possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a restricted weapon with ammunition.
They remain in custody.
