RCMP to install surveillance system at Olympic venues

Police will use sensors and video cameras to virtually patrol venues during the 2010 Olympics, Mounties said yesterday.

The RCMP issued a request for proposals yesterday seeking "perimeter intrusion detection services" for the Games.

The system, which includes sensors and video cameras connected through a closed intranet, would alert security officers of any intrusion. The system will cover more than 40 kilometres of perimeter, surrounding 25 venues, facilities, media centres and athlete villages.

"We’re using technology to supplement our security force when it makes sense from both a financial and security perspective," said RCMP Supt. Brent Bloxham.

Perimeter detection systems have been used by the RCMP in the past, but it is a first for a Canadian Olympics.
