Volunteer fest draws a crowd

Festival lovers got to shop for volunteer opportunities yesterday with their favourite events.

City hall was filled with booths looking for volunteers and people looking to volunteer during the Festival Volunteer Fair.

The fair is an event held once a year to showcase festivals and celebrations that are looking for volunteers between now and the winter months of 2011.

“Festivals are a huge part of Edmonton,” said Nana Thaver, co-ordinater with Volunteer Edmonton. “They are what make Edmonton a great place to live, work and play. Volunteers are really the backbone of these festivals, so it is super important to get involved and help support them and keep them going.”

A complete listing of the 28 arts-and-culture-related festivals is available at volunteeredmonton.com, and there will be links and contact information for all of the festivals that are still looking for volunteers.

“Volunteers are important to our festival because we can’t do it ourselves, we usually need at least 80 volunteers for the weekend,” said Ali Mansaray, resource manger of the Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival Association. “So this event is really helpful. I ran out of registration forms already.”
