Volunteer firefighters rescue elderly woman

An elderly woman was resuscitated by volunteer firefighters in New Glasgow on Sunday night.

Firefighters were called to a two-unit apartment building on North Provost Street.

The fire, which was reported a little before 8 p.m., was contained to the first level of the building with most of the damage from the fire occurring in one room, said New Glasgow fire chief Russell Mosher.

The tenant occupying the apartment where the fire occurred was at home at the time and had to be resuscitated by firefighters.

“I gotta tell you, our guys did some job. They went in there — the three guys just grabbed her, pulled her out onto the front lawn and started CPR. By the time EHS got here, she was starting to breathe on her own,” said the department’s deputy chief, Doug Dort.
