Walkers out to give dogs new lives

About 500 supporters of the Bytown Association for Rescued Kanines (BARK) — and just as many dogs — attended the eighth annual Woofs and Wags walkathon at Bruce Pit yesterday.

While the totals aren’t yet in for the fundraiser — the organization’s biggest of the year — money raised goes towards helping dogs in Ottawa and Gatineau.

Spokeswoman Lynne Miles spoke of a Great Dane, rescued by BARK, that had been severely abused.

The organization placed her in a foster home, where she quickly put on healthy weight. She will soon be ready to go to a new home.

“A lot of the folks that attended (the walk) had gotten their animals from BARK,” Miles said.

Rescue animals make wonderful pets, she said. “They’re so happy to be with people and other animals. They’re just so happy to be given a second chance.”
