“We want to celebrate our own”

The Stanley Cup comes to B.C. today when ex-Blackhawk Colin Fraser visits Surrey Central City Plaza between noon and 3 p.m. Metro spoke with Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts.

Are you excited?

I am. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with our minor hockey clubs as well as welcoming our Surrey boy back home.

Are there mixed emotions because (the Blackhawks) knocked the Canucks out?

As mayor I’m proud that he’s a Surrey boy. For anyone to have that amount of success is amazing and he absolutely deserves a lot of congratulations. And yes, I’m sorry the Canucks aren’t the ones bringing it back, but as a community we want to celebrate our own and he is a wonderful role model.

What’s planned?

It’s a three-hour community event. We’ve got the hockey clubs coming out. We’ve got a barbecue with the Stanley Cup. We’ve got over 3,100 kids in Surrey Minor Hockey and another 1,100 adult players. There’s a lot of excitement.
