Weapons seized from acreage

A tip from the public led to a rare find for Calgary police as they seized guns, ammo and an unusual weapon from a Municipal District of Rocky View property late last month.

Police executed a search warrant on an acreage in Rocky View on Jan. 29 in search of stolen property and found 16 guns — including an assault rifle — ammunition, two crossbows and a stolen truck.

Police were most concerned with the number of weapons and the fact that one was prohibited and the other was unheard of.

“It’s very unusual … I’ve never come across this type of weapon before,” District 5 Insp. Kevan Stuart said of a blow gun loaded with a metal dart. “It’s unique, interesting,” he said.

Police are investigating where the weapons originated from and where they were going.

Police said the weapons weren’t registered, though they can use the serial numbers to trace them.

“Part of the investigation will see if we connect it to organized crime,” Stuart said, adding police would also determine if the weapons were used in other crimes.

Police said suspect Rocco Amoruso, 52, of Rocky View is known to police, though police would not comment further.

Amoruso is facing 20 charges, including 15 counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm and three counts of possession of a prohibited weapon.
