Weekend To End Breast Cancer raises $2.9M

Around 1,300 people — many wearing bandages over blisters and wiping away tears — were welcomed to Rocky Mountaineer Station by a cheering crowd yesterday for the sixth annual Weekend To End Breast Cancer.

Vancouver participants walked 60 kilometres in two days to raise more than $2.9 million for research and treatment of women’s cancers.

Doug Nelson, president and CEO of the B.C. Cancer Foundation, said he walked with two women who were returning to chemo treatment tomorrow.

“Any blisters you get feel insignificant in comparison,” he said.

Breast cancer survivor Pamela Dixon, 40, from New Westminster, said it was inspiring to see so many men and children walking.

“The treatment has come such a far way because of events like this,” she said.
