Weekend wrapup of campaign promises

The NDP unveiled a community lands trust Sunday, new legislation they say would protect public access to land purchased by private companies.

The NDP say the trust would be independent from government and protect property that is important to local tourism, economy, or recreation by purchasing it on behalf of the local community.

Also over the weekend, the NDP committed to boosting the budget for truck and bridge inspection to improve road safety. The plan calls to add six new truck and bridge inspectors at a cost of $400,000.

On Friday, the NDP promised 1,000 home insulation grants for low to modest income homes as well as schools and community organizations. The insulation grants will cost $1 million.

The Liberals are promising to double funding for arts and culture in Nova Scotia, leader Stephen McNeil announced Friday. The Liberals say by 2012-13 they would spend $7 million annually in this sector.
