Weezer, Rise Against among top draws at Sonic Boom

Normally, a sonic boom occurs when an aircraft reaches supersonic speed.

When it happens in Edmonton, it’s just a kick-ass rock concert.

The highly anticipated lineup for Edmonton’s modern rock festival, Sonic Boom 2010, was announced yesterday.

This year’s festival features Rise Against, Weezer, City and Colour, Bad Religion, and Wintersleep.

One of the festival’s promoters, The Union’s marketing director Dave Johnston, said there are more bands to come.

“There will be at least two or three more bands added over the coming weeks so we’re not done yet,” he said.

Sonic Boom 2010 goes Sept. 4, which is Labour Day weekend. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and tickets are $69.50 for all ages, general admission and $129.50 for 18 and over VIP tickets.

Don’t forget the service charge.

Last year, about 10,000 fans showed up for the inaugural festival. This year, Johnston said he expects to beat that.

“I think we will,” he said. “This year, the anticipation for this announcement was so strong. I think people are really psyched about Sonic Boom. I think we’re going to see a much stronger response from people.”

Adam Thompson, music director for Sonic 102.9, the festival’s co-promoters, said last year was good. This year will be even better. “I believe this is going to be the best festival Edmonton has ever seen.”
