Westboro’s Westfest gears up for sixth year with launch party Thursday

Westboro Village’s annual festival is back for its sixth year and will kick things off at a launch party Thursday in anticipation of the main event June 12 to 14.

Westfest — a celebration of music, art and life held across 14 city blocks — is expected to attract an estimated 50,000 people who will enjoy entertainment ranging from music, art and spoken word.

“I’m pleased to invite everyone from the National Capital and Gatineau region to Westfest 2009,” said Elaina Martin, founder and producer of Westfest.

“Six years strong and, yes, if you can imagine, bigger and even better,” she said.

According to Knock on Wood’s Whitney Zelmer, the launch is a chance to see some of the entertainment expected at the festival.

The launch will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Milagro Grill in Westboro Village and include performances by Rolf Klausener and Pat Johnson of The Acorn, as well as spoken word stylings of Greg “Ritalin” Frankson and appearances by Martin, and Councillor Christine Leadman, among others.
