Western Heritage and the Calgary Stampede

Don’t let the western gear fool you, my boots have only seen pavement. My roots are in Eastern Canada so on this Western Heritage day at the Calgary Stampede I decided to round up some western history.

First stop is the Heritage Cabin. Henry and Catherine Kennedy show their granddaughter Kaylie, among other things, how cream was churned to make butter. After taking it all in she makes one discovery: “Most of the things that we have aren’t here.”

She’s right about that, no 21st century creature comforts here but western life has evolved since then and the Stampede has as well, says volunteer Wilhelmina Harcus.

“Many changes you know, it’s no longer the horse and buggy thing, it was a little more wild west back then,” she says.
