Wheelchair-bound senior murdered: Police

Ottawa police investigated the suspicious death of a wheelchair-bound man blocks away from the University of Ottawa Tuesday.

Police would only confirm that the deceased is male, however, neighbours identified the victim as Larry Chartier, a man in his 70s.

Police were called at about 2 a.m., to an Ottawa Community Housing seniors complex at 721 Chapel Cres.

Harry McGinnis, Chartier’s next door neighbour, was woken up and questioned by the police early Tuesday morning.

McGinnis told police that he hadn’t heard anything unusual from the apartment next door.

“He was a quiet guy,” said McGinnis. “He was harmless and he kept to himself.”

Will Harbour, a resident of the same building, described Chartier as a lonely man who was estranged from his wife and kids. Harbour said Chartier had been living in the building for less than a year.

“He really missed his wife and kids. He was hoping to go back to Montreal to be near them,” said Harbour. “Nobody wanted him dead.”

Police arrived after 10 a.m., and taped off the back parking lot and the area around Chartier’s back door. A detective was seen scanning the dumpster.

The incident has neighbours rattled. Many said the incident is not the first to give police a reason to visit the building.

“This is pretty scary,” said resident Linda Henderson. “There are a lot of things happening here.”

An autopsy is scheduled for late Tuesday.
