The Chilean miners, 33 men who spent 69 days trapped underground, received a rash of nominations as Metro’s Men of the Year yesterday. One reader, Julie Allmayer, made special mention of the miners’ foreman, Luis Urzua, who kept their spirits raised during the ordeal.

Reader Frank Dixon, of Franklin, Mass., nominated Sen. Scott Brown: “Since his victory against the Massachusetts Democrat machine, his name has been evoked for every underdog candidate fighting against the corrupt lifetime politicians that are running this once-great country into the ground.”

He also nominated Nancy Pelosi as Woman of the Year: “She is the poster child of everything that is wrong with Washington.”

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange continues to run neck-and-neck with President Barack Obama in the Man of the Year event, and yesterday we saw nominations for Private Bradley Manning — one of those alleged to be behind some of the WikiLeaks.
