Who will be Metro’s people of the year?

Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, of the United States Army — the first living person to receive the nation’s highest military decoration for valor, the medal of honor — joins nominees for Metro’s Man of the Year event. Giunta won the decoration for his bravery during an ambush by Taliban fighters in the Korangal Valley, Afghanistan, in October 2007.

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, continues to receive nominations — even if many Metro readers would throttle him if they could only lay their hands on him.

In the Woman of the Year event, it’s turning into a straight head-to-head between Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin.

Reader Jubilantluv nominated Mrs. Obama: “They have a young family, have done great things for heath care reform (him) and healthy eating (her). They are a power couple, very charismatic and lead balanced lives.”

And reader Ludakar nominated Sarah Palin because “she was the most abused person in the media, including by your liberal paper.”
