Window washers get clean break

It was a long hour for two window washers rescued from the ninth floor of a downtown building on Thursday when their scaffold stopped working.

Office worker Carla Williams didn’t know what was happening when she saw two rescue workers on a scaffold through her window until she saw the commotion outside.

“They (the window washers) were stuck on the scaffold for awhile and couldn’t get down,” she said outside the Sunlife building on Centre Street and 4th Avenue SW.

Fire department spokesman Jeff Budai said the high-angle rescue team was called out to the scene but the problem was fixed without the dramatic rescue.

“We think it was a safety mechanism so we switched the power back on and up they came,” he said, adding the two men weren’t very shaken up. “They actually went right back to work.”

“Apparently they didn’t have a phone on them so unfortunately that probably delayed their rescue time,” Budai added.
