Wine & brew: Cheers to U2

Leave it to me to bring wine to a tailgate party. OK, while I’m not much of a football fan, my trip to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro (just outside Boston) two weeks ago wasn’t to see a game. Me and 60,000 of my closest friends (including Tom Cruise) were there to experience U2.

Tom didn’t join us for a pre-concert tipple in the stadium’s massive parking lot, but just about everyone else did. Though I kept things simple with my bottle of American-made 2007 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.95 – $19.99) and a couple of glasses; hundreds of others came prepared to party.

Televisions, lawn chairs, barbecues: You name it and they brought it. The girls next to me were kind enough to share their grilled beef, which went perfectly with the dark berry fruit flavours of my cabernet. (Vintage 2007 was excellent in California).

Of course Boston is a beer town and Samuel Adams’ Boston Lager (6 x 355 ml, $12.10 – $15.99) is its lifeblood; combining the depth of an English ale with the refreshing personality of a Euro lager. (We had a few during the show).

So how was the concert? To quote Bono: “Magnificent.”
