"With six wine moods to choose from, you’re certain to find a bottle that fits your evening."
Every year a slew of new wine books floods the market, but this one is so useful I’d never want to face the LCBO without it in my pocket.
Billy’s Best Bottles Wines For 2008 by Billy Munnelly is designed with a dual purpose in mind. At first glance, it appears to be a “buy-this-wine” style of publication, but it actually goes far beyond that. Munnelly’s premise is much of the wine at the LCBO is either bland or overpriced. His yearly offering walks you through the best buys and the true bargain wines in every conceivable category. And, yes, the book does change every year (this is the 18th edition). There are coloured photos of the more than 200 wines he recommends, making them easy to spot on the shelves.
The second purpose of the book is to re-classify wine according to mood, instead of grape varietal. With six wine moods to choose from, you’re certain to find a bottle that fits your evening.
The book also contains loads of information on Niagara and Prince Edward County wineries and restaurants, helpful food and service tips, and straight-ahead answers to wine questions. Beautifully and intuitively designed by Munnelly’s partner, Kato Wake, it’s an easy, enjoyable read and makes a great Christmas gift.
