Amy Winehouse has won an important fan in St Lucia — the tourism minister, reports. Allen Chastanet has praised the singer for bringing publicity to the Caribbean island.

While local reports have concentrated on the darker side of Winehouse’s antics, it seems every picture of her smiling or mixing with the locals is a boost for the island, the website says.

Winehouse arrived in St. Lucia in December to stay at the luxury Le Sport resort and local media have been following her around ever since. They have accused her of everything from throwing a drink on a tourist to being sick at breakfast.

But Chastanet disagrees and says his government has sent her a gift basket of local goods to thank her for the publicity.

In a competitive world, he said, “Any edge that you can get, you hang on to it.”

The singer’s rocky marriage and problems with drugs have been widely reported and it is believed she went to the island to help her recovery. Winehouse has said that going to St Lucia “has changed everything.” She says she’s getting loads of exercise, eating brilliantly and has been able to relax.

The singer’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who has been in and out of prison in recent months, filed for divorce from jail after seeing pictures of his wife with another man on the island.

St. Lucia can look forward to more publicity — with the troubled star saying she is having such a good time, she has no plans yet to return to the U.K.
