PARK CITY, Utah – A Canadian documentary about video game developers has snagged an editing prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Indie Game: The Movie” won the world cinema documentary editing prize at a gala Saturday that marked the end of the annual movie marathon.
The feature was directed and edited by Winnipeggers Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky and faced competition from 11 other films.
Two other Canadian films competed in the world documentary category: Yung Chang’s “China Heavyweight,” about the rise of boxing in China and Jennifer Baichwal’s “Payback,” based on Margaret Atwood’s bestselling book “Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth.”
Israel’s “The Law in These Parts” took the grand jury prize in the world documentary category, while the top prize in the world dramatic category went to “Violeta Went to Heaven,” a co-production between Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Spain.
The awards were announced Saturday night.
The win for “Indie Game” comes after HBO and mega-producer Scott Rudin snapped up the rights to adapt the Canadian film for TV.
The documentary focuses on small independent video game makers and their fight to get noticed.
