Several passengers injured in bus collision after blizzard blankets Alberta highways
A bus driver has died and several Edmonton passengers have been injured, one critically, following a collision with a transport truck during a blizzard early yesterday morning.
The westbound chartered bus slammed into the back of a transport truck carrying a load of pipe around 7 a.m. on Highway 16, about 130 km west of Edmonton, police say.
“Due to the serious impact involved, (the driver) died right on scene,” said Const. Dion Barry of the Edson RCMP.
“The road conditions are being looked at as part of the overall investigation.”
The Golden Arrow Motor Coach bus was carrying a number of children enrolled in the city’s Sung Lee Taekwondo Academy who were on their way to Jasper for a ski trip, says an assistant instructor with the academy.
“I am still trying to find out if I know anyone on that bus and I am still calling the other instructors at our other locations,” said Martin Villote.
“I only heard about this ski trip a couple of days ago.”
Four people injured onboard the bus were flown to Edmonton hospitals, including one person who was listed in critical condition at the University of Alberta Hospital, according to a Capital Health spokeswoman.
Other passengers were treated at a nearby Edson hospital. Passengers who did not require medical attention were taken to a hotel, said Lana Hataley, an administrator with the Edson and District Hospital.
The identity of the bus driver will not be released until next of kin are notified, say police, and the bus company declined to comment on the highway collision when contacted yesterday.
The accident occurred on a stretch of road listed in poor condition with strong winds and limited visibility yesterday.
The Alberta Motor Association reported most roads east of the city in poor driving condition and issued weather warnings for highways south to Calgary as well.
In November, three people, including a mother and her baby from the Edmonton region, died in a Greyhound bus that lost control on icy roads near Grand Prairie. Police said bad weather was a factor in the collision.
