A 26-year-old Belleville woman has been charged with murder following the discovery of an Ottawa man’s bloodied body in the tony neighbourhood of New Edinburgh on New Year’s Day.

Residents spotted Simon Hubbard, 43, lying in a pool of blood on a sidewalk on Stanley Avenue around 1:40 p.m. Reports say he is believed to have stumbled out of a basement apartment at 190 Stanley Ave. before collapsing.

Hubbard’s accused killer, Jennifer Bird, appeared in court briefly yesterday morning to answer to a charge of second-degree murder. Handcuffed and dressed in blue prison coveralls, Bird remained quiet through most of her appearance.

Justice of the Peace Bernard Swords ordered Bird not to communicate with Shannon and Jordan Worek, Candace Barron, or anyone from Hope Outreach Shelter on Murray Street.

“It’s impossible for me to say how she is doing, but nobody is ever doing well when they are charged with this,” said Bird’s lawyer, Israel Gencher. She next appears in court Friday.

A post-mortem exam yesterday determined Hubbard’s death was the result of a stabbing, police said.
