A female believed to be in her mid-20s has died after being shot by an Edmonton police officer.

Tony Simioni, president of the Edmonton Police Association, says the incident happened after residents in an apartment complex reported a woman in the area had a gun.

Police say a male officer with substantial experience shot the suspect after she pointed the weapon directly at him.

Simioni also says a female officer was bitten by a dog during the incident.

He says it may have been a member of the K-9 unit.

Simioni says the shooting happened when the scene was in lockdown, adding the actions of the officer were justified: “We are quite confident that this was a situation where the member was trying to defend his own life.”
