A woman who followed her instincts is being hailed as a local hero after helping rescue a missing 90-year-old woman with dementia who was lost in the woods.
It was late Tuesday night when Sunderland resident Beth-Anne Russell, 51, saw an elderly women’s face flash on TV. York Regional police investigators were appealing for information about Helen Canzano, 90, a woman with severe dementia.
Earlier that day, Russell and her husband had been driving into Newmarket when Russell noticed something awry. She saw an elderly woman dressed far too warmly for the hot weather, stumbling slightly as she walked along the side of the road.
When the couple arrived home later that evening, she saw the face of the same woman on the news. “I knew right away it was her,” said Russell.
After calling police to let them know the area where she had last seen the woman, she grabbed her flashlight and car keys, ready to drive 45 minutes to help in the search.
Searching with a police officer, Russell found the woman resting in tall grass.
