The crash happened just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 11 and Highway 20 near Sylvan Lake, about 150 kilometres south of Edmonton.

By the time Mounties and Lakeside EMS and members of the Sylvan Lake fire department arrived at the scene of the single vehicle collision, the driver, a 43-year-old woman from Ashmont, was already dead.

A passenger in the car, a 51-year-old man from Eckville, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Red Deer hospital for treatment.

According to police, the woman was driving west on Highway 11 and hit a traffic light standard at Highway 20.

The vehicle was badly damaged and emergency crews found it resting in a nearby ditch.

No names have been released as RCMP continue to investigate.
